Modifications & Accommodations
Physical Environment: parents of the student are a great resource to learn how to adapt the classroom
· Arrange the classroom to facilitate mobility to all areas and activites for students using a wheelchair or crutches, preferrential seating · Make sure there is adequate storage space for student’s aids and equipment · Show the rest of the classroom how to assist in supporting a crutch with the foot on a slippery surface · Have a desk with open storage space for the students Instructional Activities · Tape the student’s paper to their desk · Attach their pencil to the desk with a piece of string and masking tape for easy retrieval, pencil grips · Assign a student to deliver and collect appropriate papers for the student · Allow students to answer questions orally · Provide the student with lecture notes |
When a cerebral palsy student is wheel chair bound, a 1:1 aide will probably be needed. Any aide should be ready to assist when needed, but encourage as much independence as possible.
Students that have difficulty with fine motor or communication skills can benefit greatly from assistive technology such as enlarged keyboards or a voice activated computer program.
Many cerebral palsy student have average or above average intelligence, but worksheets, test, and projects may need to be modified.
With effective collaboration in IEP teams, most of these students are capable of earning a regular high school diploma.
